“Ice Age” heats up box office with record opening

July 4th, 2009

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” grossed a cool $13.8 million in North American theaters on Wednesday, marking Hollywood’s biggest mid-week opening for an animated film.

The previous record Wednesday opening in the United States and Canada for a cartoon feature was “Shrek 2,” which sold $11.8 million its first day in May 2004, according to the film tracking service Hollywood.com Box-Office.

The third installment of “Ice Age,” the hit film franchise starring a computer-animated cast of prehistoric critters, also bested the blockbuster “Transformers” sequel, which sold $11.2 million on Wednesday, its eighth day in release.

“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” which opened last week at the top of the box office, has now amassed domestic ticket sales of about $240 million.

Box office analysts say “Transformers 2″ has a chance of holding on to the No. 1 spot for the U.S. July 4th holiday weekend as a whole, but the 3-D movie “Ice Age” is considered the front-runner for first place.

A third-place finish is likely to go to the period gangster drama “Public Enemies,” starring Johnny Depp as John Dillinger, which opened Wednesday with $8.2 million in U.S.-Canadian ticket sales.

“Ice Age” is distributed by 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp. “Transformers” was released by Viacom Inc’s Paramount Pictures. “Public Enemies” is a release of Universal Pictures, controlled by General Electric.

Angels and Demons

June 19th, 2009

I’d been whining for weeks that I want to watch Angels and Demons since I have read the book and it’s a shame not being able to watch the movie. My friends said it’s a nice movie and they are not disappointed. I’m supposed to go to Cybermall in Eastwood for it last night but A&G is sharing the schedule with Star Trek. Awww, I can’t wait until 10:30 PM so I went to SM Megamall instead. I’m glad that I watched the movie since it somehow rejuvenates me heheh. My faith is stronger as ever.

Changeling and Seven Pounds

March 22nd, 2009

The movie Changeling and Seven Pounds are both very moving films. They both made me rethink about my life and what I have to offer.

Changeling is the story of a woman’s quest and trials in trying to find his missing son. I am affected by the way woman are treated in the mental facility in the movie specially the torturing methods done. I admired her courage in facing the struggles along the way and I understood how crazy it is to find someone. Angelina Jolie portrayed a brave single mom and always has poised for whatever circumstances. The murder of several kids by a psycho rancher is quite disturbing and he was hanged to death. It was a good thing that a boy who escaped from the said psycho told the police that Walter Collins also escaped the ranch together with one more boy. The trial against the police force was huge and it favored Angelina. The movie ended with her having hope to continue looking for her son.

Seven Pounds is one of the most moving and influential movies that I have watched. Tim (Will Smith) helped 7 deserving people in exchange of his life to make up for the 7 people including his fiancé who died in an accident caused by his actions in the road. As always, Will Smith provided superb acting that is straight to my heart. The movie has an extraordinary story with extraordinary actors. It seemed very real since the events would really happen true to life yet the outcome may be surreal. If in any case that there would be people like Tim in the real world, then I admire him and will have my respect.

Sometimes, we could really help other in small ways unnoticeable. It just depends on us how to do it. Great things come form small beginnings. It would take so much courage from us to change other people’s lives and that would make us a better person.

Be someone that you could be proud of…
